Buff-banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) – my first sighting of this highly-patterned bird (lifer # 187). I was actually lucky to see it, as I was sitting down waiting for a Forest Kingfisher to return to the area. This bird poked its head out of some reeds, I recognised it was a new species, moved slightly and it went back into the reeds. I laid down and waited for about 10 minutes until it finally came back out, this time I was able to snap a few shots. It certainly knew I was there, but kept its distance and a wary eye on me as it searched for food. Lake Eden, North Lakes, Queensland, Australia. Got very close to a captive bird, I would have stayed well back if it was wild. Canon EOS 1000D, 1/160 sec at f/5.0 ISO 800 FL 15mm.

Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus optatus). The Oriental Cuckoo visits the Australian Eastern seaboard during Winter as far south as Sydney, each bird regularly returning to the same site. Interestingly, they do not migrate to Australia to breed as most other Cuckoos do. You can see the similarity it has with the Pacific Baza, easily mistaken for the Baza by size and underbelly stripes and colouring. Anstead Bushland Reserve, Anstead, Queensland, Australia. NIKON D500 + 200.0-500.0 mm f/5.6 1/500 @ f/7.1 ISO 160 @ 750 mm (effective FL)
