This heron frequents wetlands and occasionally coastal mudflats. The spots on the neck disappear during the breeding season and the bright white neck and shoulder patch highlights the iridescent maroon and dark green of the wings and body. Mostly seen as solitary birds or small groups it is also to be seen soaring high on rising thermals.

I took this photo at low light just in time for the setting sun to catch the colour of the feathers. I shot this with a Nikon 200-500 lens set at f/5.6 and ISO-800.
